International conference on food loss and waste

On October 8, 2024, València, in its role as European Green Capital 2024, will host the international event "Capacity building for food loss and waste prevention and reduction in cities."

Organized by the Global Center for Sustainable Urban Food Systems (CEMAS) in collaboration with the European Food Information Council (EUFIC), this event will bring together representatives from various European cities to address one of the most pressing environmental and social challenges of our time.

Food waste is a global problem that generates between 8 and 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions and, at the same time, contrasts with the alarming figure of 783 million people suffering from hunger every year. In this context, the event in València aims to foster the exchange of experiences and knowledge among European cities, promoting public policies and initiatives that help reduce food loss and waste.

The event's program will include plenary sessions and interactive workshops. In the morning, two plenary sessions will be held: one will address the current situation and European policies on food waste, and the other will showcase successful experiences from European cities in this fight. In the afternoon, attendees will participate in parallel workshops that will allow them to discuss and share strategies on consumer awareness, collaboration among multiple stakeholders, and the management and valorization of food waste.

València, as European Green Capital 2024, reinforces its commitment to sustainability by hosting this crucial event for collaboration and innovation. The city positions itself as a leader in creating effective solutions to tackle global environmental challenges. Additionally, the event will serve as a platform to amplify the impact of these initiatives, thanks to the participation of European cities and dissemination through digital platforms. Registrations open in September.
