The city of València and its decades-long history in innovation is aligned with the new European Innovation Agenda, as it prioritises the promotion of research, innovation, technological development and public-private collaboration to promote sustainable economic growth and the generation of quality employment.

The València Urban Sandbox is framed in this context, as an instrument launched by València Innovation Capital and the València 2030 Urban Strategy, at the service of companies and researchers, making València a friendly and receptive city to host innovation and experimentation tests. This instrument has been developed since its inception, and has in its application, a participatory governance model of the entire ecosystem based on the quadruple helix: private sector, academia, public sector, civil society and citizens.

The Urban Sandbox of València as an instrument for experimentation

Among the singularities of the Urban Sandbox of València is its scope of application since it includes any innovation project that requires the use of prototypes, experimental tests, tests, platforms, products, programs, and that come from any sector, activity, technology or source of knowledge, including the humanities. These projects are aimed at the search for new solutions or functionalities that do not currently exist on the market and that can demonstrate their potential economic, social or environmental impact.

The Sandbox of the City of València is thus open to innovation projects that address environmental aspects, urban regeneration, circular economy, digitalisation, modernisation of the public sector, governance and smart city or technology and data, among other areas. In short, it is about looking for solutions that not only address current challenges and needs, but also anticipate future challenges and needs in a proactive way with the ecosystem, with a positive impact on society and people and the city strategy.

The aim is to promote economic growth based on science, technology and innovation in València and its area of influence, generating quality employment, attracting talent and investment, strengthening the productive and business fabric and favourable conditions for the development of new products, services or innovative business models with success in the market.
