The SDGs provide a long-term, non-partisan framework for a more sustainable vision of urban development that provides equal opportunities for all inhabitants, promotes healthy living environments with access to green space, and is resilient in the face of everyday disasters and climatic hazards.
Providing quality education for all is fundamental to creating a peaceful and prosperous world. Education gives people the knowledge and skills they need to stay healthy, get jobs and foster tolerance.
The COVID-19 outbreak, however, has caused a global education crisis. Most education systems in the world have been severely affected by education disruptions and have faced unprecedented challenges. School closures brought on by the pandemic have had devastating consequences for children’s learning and well-being.
It is estimated that 147 million children missed more than half of their in-class instruction over the past two years. This generation of children could lose a combined total of $17 trillion in lifetime earnings in present value.
School closures have affected girls, children from disadvantaged backgrounds, those living in rural areas, children with disabilities and children from ethnic minorities more than their peers.
Education enables upward socioeconomic mobility and is key to escaping poverty. Over the past decade, great strides were made in expanding access to education and school enrollment rates at all levels, especially for girls. However, around 260 million children were still out of school in 2018, about one-fifth of the world's population in that age group. In addition, more than half of all children and adolescents worldwide are not reaching minimum proficiency standards in reading and mathematics.
In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe, most countries announced temporary school closures, affecting more than 91% of students worldwide. In April 2020, nearly 1.6 billion children and youth were out of school. Similarly, almost 369 million children who rely on school canteens had to seek other sources of daily nutrition.
Never before have so many children been out of school simultaneously, disrupting their learning and drastically changing their lives, especially those of the most vulnerable and marginalized children. The global pandemic has serious consequences that could jeopardize hard-won gains in improving education worldwide.
