Today, the Monforte Gardens have planted the “E. Veyrat Hermanos” rose as part of València European Green Capital 2024. The donation, made by the Veyrat brothers, represents a milestone in the preservation of historically significant plant species.
The Director General of the European Green Capital, Antonio García Celda, highlighted that “the reintegration of this variety into the Monforte Garden is a great initiative for the preservation of species with high historical and botanical value.” He also emphasized that “projects like this are fundamental, as over time, many rose varieties have disappeared or become extinct due to factors such as urban expansion, the loss of green spaces, or a lack of awareness.”
The Veyrat Family Rose
This variety has been presented at Iberflora by architect and landscape designer Roberto Duato Veyrat. Its arrival at the fair marks the 130th anniversary of its creation and pays tribute to the Veyrat family, a reference in horticulture and landscaping since 1875.
The Veyrat family, whose founder, the Frenchman Étienne Veyrat, established his company on Calle de la Mar (“Plant Courtyard”), received numerous awards for their contributions to gardening. The “E. Veyrat Hermanos” rose was even exhibited at the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition. This climbing variety stands out for its yellow-damask and pink-crimson hues, as well as its intense yet delicate fragrance.
The “E. Veyrat Hermanos” rose is a climbing variety obtained in 1894 by the prestigious rosarian Alexandre Bernaix from Lyon. Its reintroduction into the city's historic gardens represents another step forward in the commitment to conserving and enhancing València’s botanical heritage. Additionally, plans are in place for its future planting in gardens and other urban green spaces.
With the arrival of this iconic flower in València, the city strengthens its commitment to biodiversity and the preservation of its natural legacy in the year it holds the title of European Green Capital.
